Happy Days is a culmination of artist Rebecca Louise Wilson's love of enamel work and the Great British seaside - evoking childhood memories of carefree days out at the seaside and 'Wish you were here...' picture postcards.
Rebecca’s designs start with naive line drawings and doodles which often find their way onto the finished enamel piece. Simple everyday scenes and trips to the seaside inspire her and she uses hand cut stencils and transfers to add detail and definition. The addition of a chunky driftwood base, with ribbons and shells enhancing the design and ensuring that the finished sculpture is a one-off, whimsical piece.
Enamelling is the process of applying powdered glass through a fine sieve onto a copper base. The metal is then placed inside a small kiln for a couple of minutes, with temperatures reaching between 750° and 850° the glass powder becomes liquid. This is carefully removed from the kiln and the molten glass solidifies to form a smooth, hard surface. Rebecca applies each colour individually, building up many layers on each piece.
The nature of the materials and the processes used mean that this piece is totally unique.
